MELBOURNE, Fla., and WASHINGTON, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris
Corporation (NYSE: HRS), an international communications and information
technology company, today received a Corporate Citizenship Award from the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center. The company was
recognized in the category of Corporate Stewardship, which honors overall
values, strategies and practices related to corporate responsibility.
"In addition to being a successful business, Harris has taken strides to
become an environmentally responsible company and a valued philanthropic
partner in its communities," said Stephen Jordan, director, Business Civic
Leadership Center (BCLC).
A distinguished panel of corporate citizenship experts chaired by Harvard
Business professor Michael Porter selected Harris as the award recipient for
its environmental initiatives that conserve water, eliminate the use of
hazardous materials and minimize waste, as well as its participation in, and
support of, diverse community-based philanthropic programs. U.S. Chamber
President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue presented the award during a dinner held
at Washington, D.C.'s historic National Building Museum.
During 2007, Harris employees worldwide logged more than 65,000 volunteer
hours, which represent some $6.5 million in volunteer labor in the community.
In 2008, Harris, its employees, and its retirees raised more than $1.1 million
for the United Way Campaign of Brevard County, Florida, home to the company's
headquarters.
Harris also teamed last year with MILCOM, the premier military
communications conference, to support the USO of Metropolitan Washington to
help serve military families at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Bethesda
National Naval Medical Center, and other locations. The company also teamed
with the Orlando Magic in 2007 and 2008 to host two Seats for Soldiers Nights,
which provided free tickets to military men and women and their families.
